HOLIDAY

I know that is only November, but for me is like Holiday Season...... Thanks Giving is coming (even thou we don't celebrate thanks giving in the UK). but Christmas is right around the corner

and after that is Chinese New Year......Which is now my favorite holiday of the year, only because

as a teacher a have a month off to rest.....Cool!!!!! It is a much needed holiday even thou my kids are also home (meaning lots of noise). Or maybe i am stressed......This is a very busy week for me. I am responsible for all the preparation of Christmas events in my Elementary School, what is a lot of paper work, meetings, paper work, meetings............non stop . But tomorrow is my wedding anniversary(17 years) so i should put the stress behind me and prepare myself.......!!!!!@@@?????? if you know what i mean......bye,bye.

Hi Sandra,

I am from Taiwan but have been living in the US for 13+ years. Lately, I found out about the "WTO" show. I have been watching the shows on youtube. I really like you, and many others in the show.

However, I do have one complaint!
In one episode on traffic in Taiwan, I found one comment by Laura (from the Netherlands) totally out of line. She said that she could not help but burst out laughing on her way to work because of a traffic sign "yield". She said that the use of the word "yield" was funny. Yeah, it's really funny. I am in the US and there are "yield" signs all over the place. What's so funny about the yield sign?! I thought that either you or Kim (from the US) would correct her... but neither of you did. I understand that English is not her native language, which is not mine, either. I find Laura's comment inappropriate and somewhat offensive.

Oh, by the way, I am really glad that you are teaching English in Taiwan. I personally consider the overall English education in Taiwan is quite pathetic. I realized the real difference in pronunciation between "it" and "eat" when I was in my sophomore year at NTU. You probably heard about the nonsense most Taiwanese teachers claimed on this: the difference is that one vowel is shorter and the other is longer. This is so laughable, seriously, unlike Laura's comment! Furthermore, this is totally useless since there is only one "e" sound in Mandarin.

I still remember the very first time when I listened to a native speaker speaking English, I could not detect any "short" vowel, Everything is so short and quick. The real difference is the resonant point of the sound. I am a woodwind player and that helps me detect the subtle differences.

I know you don't celebrate Thanksgiving in the UK, but they do here in the US. I am not really into turkey. But I will still say: happy turkey day!

Best to you,
Jack

Dear Jack
I am so happy and surprised to know that you guys really watch the show in the US.
Leaving in Taiwan is awsome but sometimes we really miss our home... The WTO show is a way for us (from other countries) to get together and share our experiences and have some fun...

Dear Sandra,

I can certainly relate to what you were saying. Like I said, I have been living in the US for 13+ years. I came here when I was 26. During the first few years, it was quite challenging due to culture shock, language barrier, etc. I am more and more used to the life style here in the US now but could get homesick once in a while.

Before watching this show, I had no idea we've got so many foreigners who got married to Taiwanese. The thing which touched my heart the most is that you guys seem to really appreciate what Taiwan has to offer and view yourselves as Taiwanese. I also think that the idea of the show is excellent because it provides a great platform for you guys to hang out and share your experiences. If they are smart enough to create a show like this in the US, I could be on the show!

I enjoy watching you on the show. Someone uploads each episode the following morning to youtube which makes my life really easy! If your folks in UK want to have a look at you, they may do so through youtube. Here is the link:

Enjoy and have fun in the show. I am watching!

Cheers,
Jack
